The significant challenge was balancing a visually appealing aesthetic with a functional design that could communicate effectively to a diverse audience, including families, donors, and volunteers. You initially explored playful, illustrative styles but found it challenging to connect this approach with the organization's professional yet compassionate image. Another hurdle was ensuring the final design was accessible and resonated with non-designers.
Pasadena Humane was established in 1903 as the Pasadena Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Initially formed to address the mistreatment of work animals, it has since expanded its services to become a full-service animal welfare organization. The organization underwent several changes and rebranding efforts over the years, reflecting its evolving role in the community and a stronger commitment to broader animal welfare issues. Today, Pasadena Humane is a well-regarded leader in animal advocacy, sheltering, and education in the San Gabriel Valley and surrounding regions.
History
Outcome
The final design successfully balanced aesthetics and functionality, making it easier for Pasadena Humane to communicate its message. This project also marked your growth as a designer, showcasing your ability to adapt to constraints and create designs that are not only visually engaging but also serve a meaningful purpose.
Logo Exploration
In the first step of the Pasadena Humane Society project, I explored graphic styles and was drawn to line illustrations for their clean and approachable feel. It was my first time trying this technique at ArtCenter, making the process both exciting and challenging. I also experimented with warm, inviting color palettes to ensure versatility across digital and print applications, setting the foundation for the project's visual direction.
Posters Exploration
The first series I created was a set of mission statement posters featuring duo-color, specially treated images integrated with line art. A continuous line ran through all three posters, visually connecting them and symbolizing the bond between people, animals, and the organization’s mission. The bright and approachable design made the message easy to understand while maintaining a cohesive look.
Poster Serie #1
Poster Series #2
For the second series of posters, I built on the established color palette to maintain consistency while shifting the focus to specific events hosted by Pasadena Humane. This series highlighted actual programs and activities, ensuring the designs were both visually engaging and informative, directly connecting the audience to the organization's offerings.
